whats the difference between a gulf and a sea?

Question: if the red sea looks alot like a gulf

Answer: I don't know if there is any specific criteria. The "Red Sea" has been called that for thousands of years, and if someone would decide to change it to the "Red Gulf", he would be chased out of town on a rail. The Red Sea does have two subsidiary gulfs, the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. On the other hand, the much larger Carriabean (sic) Sea has the rather large subsidiary, the Gulf of Mexico.
